Biography

Diana Hand

I am a professional artist and craftsperson based in Scotland. I trained at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford and the Glasgow School of Art. I specialize in equestrian art and I work in a loose and expressive style. This enables me to directly access my own feelings as mirrored in the amazing creature that is the horse. Often I show horses in their full movement and energy, but sometimes I like to show them in repose, quietly communicating and enjoying the space between each other.

I work in charcoal and also in colour using acrylic or oil paint. The oil studies shown in this entry depict a young Australian warmblood horse, both as a yearling and more mature. The spirit of this young horse is a muse for me and I never tire of trying to capture his energy and strength as well as the multitude of colours in his coat.

My book “Draw Horses in 15 Minutes” (Ilex/Octopus) was published in 2015. I run workshops based on the method described in the book, which explores general art techniques and also specific detail on equine anatomy.
