Born in 1957, Derek grew up in the Sussex countryside with a passion for the natural world.
Art and photography developed as a way of recording what he had seen and as a way of sharing the beauty of nature with others. He nearly became and illustrator in his early 20s but photography took over and a career as a staff photographer for local newspapers continued for 35 years. Derek turned freelance and it was then that he returned to drawing and painting as a way of supplementing his income. He had rather lost confidence in his ability but found that those years on making photographs had honed his observational skills and he could enjoy art more than ever before. Light is everything and for Derek it is particularly the reflected light in shadows that fascinates him. Horses, dogs cats, people and landscapes are Derek’s favourite subjects and he is thrilled to receive commissions.
