Society President Sir Mark Prescott Bt. opened the Summer Exhibition \u2013 on a sunny evening at Palace House Mews \u2013 and expressed the Society’s desire to build on and improve the variety and scale of the work of its equestrian artists.<\/span><\/strong>

SEA Chairman Sheila Bailey pointed out the debt of gratitude owed to an army of people involved in bringing the exhibition to fruition. She took the opportunity to make a special announcement of a new award in association with Arena Racing Company (ARC) \u2013 The<\/strong> Silk Series Best Racing Picture by a Female Artist<\/strong>. The award supports a new race series worth \u00a3100,000 providing opportunity to champion pioneering female jockeys hosted at nine Ladies\u2019 Days at ARC racecourses between May and September.<\/p>\n

Six shortlisted finalists for the new award were announced, of which four will go on to a public vote in August. The winning artist, as well as receiving an ARC Annual Membership, will receive a commission worth \u00a31,000 to create an artwork ready for presentation at Ladies\u2019 Day of the St Leger Festival at Doncaster on 14th September. Sarah Hodson<\/a> SEA, Annabel Thornton, Laura Barber-Riley<\/a> SEA, Glynis Mills<\/a> HSEA, Jane Braithwaite <\/a>ASEA and Alison Wilson SEA were announced as shortlisted for this award.<\/p>\n

Chris Garibaldi, Director of the National Heritage Centre in Newmarket, extended the welcome to Palace House Mews: “We are delighted to host the SEA Summer Exhibition, which is a fantastic addition to what we have on offer here at the National Heritage Centre. We are very keen that it will grow year on year to become the must-see exhibition in our calendar.<\/p>\n

“This year has already been an outstanding one for us, for which we are very proud. We were shortlisted as an Art Fund Museum of the Year 2017 Finalist, and it was announced in June that, in 2018, we will become an Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation, further enabling us to put on exhibitions and support education plans. It is a wonderful vote of confidence in our ambition and the unique cultural space we occupy across sport, science and the arts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Having judged the Summer Exhibition Best in Show<\/strong> Chris announced the winner as Elizabeth Moriarty for ‘Trotting’ (highly commended: Guy Allen for ‘Horse Study \u2013 Blue’).<\/p>\n

Representing Juddmonte Farms Jim Power SEA presented the Banstead Manor Best Sporting Picture<\/strong> to Sally Martin SEA for ‘The Fellowship of Mud’ (highly commended: Jane Braithwaite ASEA for ‘Athlete’).<\/p>\n

On Saturday 15th July Laura Barber-Riley SEA will be ‘artist in residence’ <\/strong>at Palace House. Visitors are welcome to view the exhibition during the day and speak to Laura to find out more about the life of an artist.<\/p>\n

The 38th Annual Exhibition of the Society of Equestrian Artists \u2013 Horse in Art<\/strong>, is returning to Sally Mitchell\u2019s Gallery at the Museum of the Horse in Tuxford, Nottinghamshire from 23rd September to 7th October. The event remains the focal point of achievement and the majority or awards will take place at that exhibition, which showcases the very best in equestrian art, including painting, drawing, sculpture and original print. A ‘meet the artist’ event is being planned during the exhibition and budding artists are encouraged to bring their own pieces along for critique and advice.
