Sue Drew BA(Hons)

After leaving school Sue moved from London to Taunton and took a foundation year at Somerset College of Art followed by a degree in Fashion Design with Textiles at Gloucestershire College of Art and Design in Cheltenham. After graduating with upper second class honours she worked as a designer in London but, growing tired of the rat-race, eventually moved back to Taunton.

“My interest in painting was re-kindled by my father who had studied under Carel Weight at Hammersmith College of Art. I decided to teach myself watercolour painting, enjoyed it and moved on to oils and acrylics in 2001.

“I have always loved animals and have owned two horses, the first of whom was with me for over 35 years. My second horse was a retired hurdler formerly owned and trained up north by the late, great Arthur Stephenson. I have recently rehomed a companion pony from World Horse Welfare. Riding and looking after horses for so long has, I hope, given me some of the experience and understanding to be able to paint them.

“I specialise in painting racehorses, eventers and polo ponies, either as portraits or in action, and have been pleased to receive commissions to paint, among others, the winners ‘Lord Strickland’, ‘Pond House‘, ‘In Contrast’, ‘Intersky Falcon’, ‘Mutadarra’, ‘Never A Doubt’ and the CCI*** eventer ‘Gentle George’. In addition, Channel 4 Racing commissioned an equine portrait to be won on their digital satellite page during Cheltenham Week 2005.

“My work is hung permanently at Exeter and Taunton racecourses and the Pontispool Horse Trials venue and is featured in the 20th edition of ‘Travelling the Turf‘. I have also been pleased to donate work in support of Charity Racedays at Newbury and Wincanton, for Lambourn Open Day, the Injured Jockeys Fund and the Riding for the Disabled Association.”

Sue works in acrylic, oil or watercolour and welcomes commission enquiries.
