Clifford Almond

Biography

I reside in the Yorkshire Dales with my wife, in close proximity to several distinguished Racing Stables. Catterick Racecourse is nearby, while Thirsk and York courses are just a short drive away.

My passion for equine art was ignited several years ago when I developed an interest in Classical Drawing. This art form allowed me to depict my daughters’ horses, and more recently, those of my two granddaughters. Additionally, my enthusiasm was further fuelled by attending various Horse Trials in which my daughter has participated.
I have a particular affinity for classical drawing, as it emphasizes the study of human and animal anatomy. This focus enables a more realistic portrayal and enhances creative expression through a profound understanding of the equine form, utilizing the straightforward mediums of pencil or charcoal, reminiscent of the works of Da Vinci and Rembrandt.

My primary medium is Graphite Pencil, complemented by fine Technical Ink Pens to highlight specific details, all applied to high-quality paper. I also incorporate coloured pencils, both in their traditional dry form and the water-soluble variety, which allows for intricate representations of horse anatomy. This technique results in artwork that can be appreciated from a distance, while also inviting viewers to discover finer details upon closer inspection.
The meticulous detail in my drawings is informed by my background as a Mechanical Engineering Draughtsman, along with a career in Architecture. This technical foundation distinguishes my work from others that may adopt a more fluid or loose drawing style.

To ensure accuracy in detail, I consistently utilize photography as a reference tool, which proves particularly beneficial when working from a distance for clients.

As a member of the Society of Equestrian Artists, I am open to considering select commissions. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested in purchasing any of my artwork, or if you have any questions or inquiries regarding commissions.
