Margery Shotton A.S.E.A

Biography

Horses have always been an important part of Margery’s life, from the arrival of a pony called Bunty that her father had purchased from “Fingers Nicholson” (head of the local gypsy family from “Tow Law”) for £15. He had no mouth and manners to match and she often would arrive home covered in bruises, the result of being bitten or bucked off

Her earliest experiences of putting pencil to paper came from the desire to draw Bunty and the variety of other animals around the farm. This urge continued into adulthood, when time allowed, between helping with cattle and sheep and bringing up two pony mad daughters. Her interest in art developed until the urge to learn more about art led to her gaining a degree in fine art from the University of Sunderland in 1996

Painting then took over from rearing calves and lambing several hundred sheep with husband Mark on Catlaw Hall Farm, but she still finds time if the call comes from second daughter Catherine to give a hand with her eventers. Margery has had work selected and been successful in several open art exhibitions. She has been a past Northern regional winner of the Laing Landscape competition and a prize winner at the SEA Annual Exhibition in 2004. Margery joined the SEA in 2001 and was up graded to an associate in 2003

Her work involves a variety of subjects which are largely based around her life in the countryside. There is no limit to her subject matter and she is happy to work to commission
