Camilla Le May ASEA

Biography

Camilla (b.1973) had a passion for clay modelling from her school days, but it was only in 1996 after encouragement from the late Sir Eduardo Paolozzi on his masterclass that she decided to pursue sculpting more seriously. Her work is now bought by private art collectors worldwide and has been exhibited and sold by established galleries since 2000

Camilla studied at Edinburgh University and Chelsea College of Art. Her work is initially modelled in clay then cast into bronze. Having worked at a bronze foundry for a few years she is very particular about the finish and does all of the wax work, much of the chasing and patinas herself and will only use a certain type of bronze in order to attain the best patination

Her love of animals, wildlife and wilderness areas was fostered by growing up on her parents’ farm, training horses and competing. She spent much of 2000-08 living on game reserves in South Africa, sculpting the wildlife and teaching clay modeling, drawing and pottery after setting up The Nedcor Art in the Community Project. Camilla is now based in East Sussex but returns to Africa for inspiration as often as possible

She has done numerous commissions and has won two bursary awards from the Society of Wildlife Artists and the British Sporting Art Trust Sculpture Award in 2007 for her portrait of a polo pony

Since 2010 Camilla has been the inaugural Artist in Residence at the Royal Veterinary College, for whom she has sculpted Sefton, the Household Cavalry horse who survived the 1982 IRA bombing in Hyde Park. The life size bronze is now cast and will be unveiled in Spring 2013. For images and the story of the making of Sefton please view http://www.camillalemay.com/blog/ or via her website above. As part of this residency she has also given extra curricular sculpture workshops for the RVC students and attended dissections and other relevant lectures as background study for her sculpture of Sefton. Anatomy and form as well as capturing a typical pose / attitude or movement is central to her work, as such she prefers to sculpt from life wherever possible
