Sue carves horses out of a variety of hardwoods, most recently walnut, applewood and oak. She works with chisels and mallet, trying to keep a sense of life and movement in the carving as well as responding to the grain patterns revealed in the wood as the carving proceeds

Sue lives and works in the Cotswolds, an area associated with the Arts and Crafts movement in the early 20th century. She feels that their principle of “truth to materials” is important in her work. The design needs to take into account the beauty of the wood, the direction of the grain and the properties of different species of wood

Because of the nature of the carving process, each piece is an original. The surface of the carvings are usually left with a tooled finish and oil or beeswax polish
